History: Salzburg's southern suburb

Nonntal is one of Salzburg’s oldest suburbs and has been closely intertwined with the city’s history since the Middle Ages. The district takes its name from the Nonnberg – the hill on which the Benedictine Abbey of Nonnberg stands, one of the oldest surviving convents in the German-speaking world, founded around the year 714. Until the 19th century, Nonntal was always referred to as the ‘Nonntal suburb’ – today it is an integral part of Salzburg city centre.
