History and tradition

The name Aigen is derived from the Old High German word ‘eigan’ – meaning freely inheritable land ownership, or free private property. Prosperity is therefore literally in this district’s DNA. The word ‘Aigen’ first appeared as early as 1402 in connection with a noble residence. In the 19th century, the first stately villas were built here, including the famous Villa Walburga, which passed into the ownership of Lieutenant Commander Georg Ludwig Ritter von Trapp in 1923 – the family known to the world through “The Sound of Music”. In 1939, Aigen was incorporated into the city of Salzburg and has since been one of the most expensive and sought-after residential districts in the provincial capital.

Green tranquillity in the middle of the city

Covering an area of around 355 hectares and boasting an exceptionally high proportion of green space, Aigen offers a quality of life that is unique for an inner-city district. At its heart lies Aigner Park – an English landscape park created around 1780 during the Age of Enlightenment and expanded under Prince Schwarzenberg. With its paths, viewing points, grottos and watercourses, it ranks among the most significant garden monuments of the early 19th century in Austria.
